Married in the fast lane
A newlywed couple will remember their dream day for all the wrong reasons after Sydney police arrested their limousine driver for street racing on their way home.
John and Laina Tauranga had been married for only a few hours and were heading home when their chauffeur was allegedly involved in a street race with a white Holden Commodore in Sydney's west.
Police allege their black Holden Caprice hire car reached speeds of up to 130km/h on the Great Western Highway at St Marys at about 9pm last night.
The married couple said they had stopped at a red light and were kissing in the back seat before the drag race began.
"I was thinking about her more, thinking about our lives together," Mr Tauranga told television reporters.
"We've just started a new life, and we don't want to die at this age," he said.
"We feel pretty gutted."
His wife Laina said: "We've been married for a couple of hours, (it's) very shattering, especially on our special day."
The 42-year-old limo driver from Bankstown and a 17-year-old Erskine Park youth, who was driving the Commodore carrying three other youths, have been charged with taking part in a race between vehicles, driving in a dangerous manner and exceeding the speed limit by more than 45km/h.
Both vehicles were confiscated, but local police officers offered the stranded newlyweds a ride - in the back of a police car.
